Composite Material Basics
Composites materials have the ability to produce high quality, durable, cost-effective products to be used in your application. You probably already run into composite products on a daily basis, and may recognize these as being called fiberglass or carbon fiber parts. They are used in parts on the exterior of your car, the hulls and decks of sport boats and personal watercrafts, airplane exteriors and interiors, and a huge range of other items.
In brief, composite products are formed through the combination of two or more materials that give the product properties well beyond those of any of the individual components. The main materials combined are a fiber reinforcement and a polymer matrix.
The options for each of the materials are extensive, and can provide different product results based how they perform individually and how they are combined. This ability to customize the composite laminate is key to the success of a composite product, giving a designer the ability to engineer the combination of materials just required for the product.
In addition, composites offer a list of advantages beyond other materials, including strength to weight ratios superior to steel, the ability to easily design the material with complex and precise shapes, consolidation of components, and relatively low investments required for production tooling.
Please contact us to learn how we can help tailor the design to the optimum cost performance balance.
